GMA Kapuso Foundation, the socio-civic charity arm of the country’s leading television and radio network, GMA Network, delivered aid to Filipino children preparing for the first day of classes and to those affected by the recent Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in areas of Mindanao, including General Santos and Saranggani provinces.
For most communities, the beginning of the school year brought challenges, including a lack of safe, resilient learning spaces, limited access to basic learning necessities and resources, and class disruptions caused by natural disasters. That’s why the charity supported Filipino learners in underserved communities through the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan and the Kapuso School Development initiatives.
The Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan initiative provides 60,000 customized school bags and complete sets of school supplies to incoming Kindergarten and Grade 1 students at select public elementary schools nationwide. Each student (the beneficiary) will receive a backpack, complete with school supplies such as a built-in pencil case with five notebooks, two pad papers, two pencils, a sharpener, an eraser, and a set of 16-piece crayons. The charity promised to provide 60,000 learners nationwide with these school items.
Following the severe devastation in Aurora province, which was placed under a state of calamity, the charity launched the initiative in November 2025. A total of 3,000 schoolchildren from 64 public schools in Dilasag, Dinalungan, Dingalan, and Casiguran received school bags with school supplies. Meanwhile, almost 15,000 Filipino learners in areas affected by typhoons Emong, Basyang, and Tino, including Pangasinan, Iligan, and Negros Island, also received the same set of school items needed for every learner.
The Kapuso School Development initiative, on the other hand, constructs sturdy Kapuso Classrooms complete with restrooms. As part of the bayanihan spirit that the charity extended to those affected by the natural disasters, the program encourages volunteerism and hires additional labor from their local community to build classrooms. To date, the program has turned over 457 classrooms to various communities nationwide.
Through generous donations and community efforts received via their official channels, the charity mobilized support to help affected communities, including those that happened in Cebu in 2025 – the Magnitude 6.9 earthquake on September 30, 2025, and Typhoon Tino on November 4, 2025. All learners from Talisay Integrated School, situated in Daanbantayan, now have Kapuso classrooms built to last, which withstand up to a Magnitude 8.0 earthquake and winds of up to 280 kilometers per hour.
The initiative was also extended to Dakit Elementary School in Bogo City. In addition to the newly built Kapuso classrooms, a hygiene facility and a foot bath for Muslim students were built, promoting inclusion within the community and safety. The charity will soon build resilient classrooms for the students of Panugnawan Elementary School in Medellin, Cebu.
The charity also turned over its first two-story, flood-resistant Kapuso School Building at Malitbog Elementary School, featuring three classrooms with a comfort room. The Kapuso School Building in MES can withstand a Magnitude 8 earthquake.
Meanwhile, following the recent Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in General Santos and Saranggani provinces on June 8, 2026, thousands of families lost their homes. Crises, including a lack of water and food, are among the main problems caused by the earthquake.
As a result, in addition to the two school initiatives, GMA Kapuso Foundation begins its relief operations in the General Santos and Sarangani (Glan) areas through Operation Bayanihan. On the first day of relief operations on June 9, 2026, the charity distributed relief goods to about 300 affected families in Sitio Intake, Barangay Mabuhay, City of General Santos.
On June 10, 2026, despite accessibility problems, the charity team went to Glan, Saranggani, in partnership with Marchael Sea Ventures (for the use of its sea vessels), to deliver its relief goods to over 1,500 affected families who were inside their tents, citing that their homes had either collapsed or been damaged by the earthquake. GMA Kapuso Foundation continued to deliver help to those affected by the earthquake.
The Operation Bayanihan initiative to those affected by the Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao areas are supported by its donors and volunteers, including Universal Guardians Brotherhood – RGI Alakdan General Santos (representing its nationwide president Bond Contapay), JC Cares Foundation, Asia Brewery (representing Absolute Distilled Drinking Water), Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Marchael Sea Ventures (representing Atty. Tom Falgui), Universal Robina, STI College General Santos, General Santos Doctors’ Medical School Foundation, and Mindanao State University General Santos.
GMA Kapuso Foundation is still accepting donations from the public for those affected by the Magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao. In-kind donations are accepted from 9:00 to 17:00. Donations can also be made (at any amount) through the charity’s official bank and e-wallet (GCash and PalawanPay) accounts, or through Cebuana Lhuillier, Globe Rewards, Metrobank Credit Cards, and e-commerce platforms, including Lazada and Shopee.
