On July 29, 2026, following a convened hearing between the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and the representatives and legal counsels of the ABS-CBN Studios noontime variety show It’s Showtime, including ABS-CBN Corporation (ABS-CBN, PSE: ABS), GMA Network, Inc. (GMA, PSE: GMA7), Zoe Broadcasting Network, Inc. (A2Z), and Advanced Media Broadcasting System (ALLTV2), which tackled the issues from the show’s “Memerimar” skit as seen in the Laro Laro Pick segment broadcast on July 24, 2026, the board issued an order directing them to file a verified Joint Position Paper (JPP) within at least seven (7) calendar days in line of their rules and procedures.
The parties were allowed to be heard regarding issues stemming from the “Memerimar” skit, which stars Vice Ganda and Ion Perez, and it is a combination of “Meme” (Vice Ganda’s nickname) and “Marimar” (one of the hit Mexican television series aired on Televisa-owned Las Estrellas, headlined by Thalia).
As part of the due process, the MTRCB listened to the explanations presented and reiterated its mandate under the MTRCB Charter or the Presidential Decree â„– 1986 and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) to ensure that all television programs comply with relevant broadcast standards, and its TV ratings, G (General Patronage), PG (Parental Guidance), and SPG (Strong Parental Guidance).
Following the hearing, the Hearing and Adjudication Committee (HAC) team, Committee Chair Board Member Atty. Ricardo “Jojo” M. Salomon Jr., and Committee and Board Members Atty. Pedro Cesar Gabriel “Chet” A. Solidum and BM Wilma V. Galvante, ordered the respondents to file a verified JPP within the next seven days from the receipt of the order.
The committee likewise directed them to submit a Joint Undertaking (JU) that outlines concrete measures to strengthen and comply with the standards, including those related to live, improvised, and comedy segments. To avoid further violating their rules and regulations, MTRCB also instructed the respondents to designate an On-Air Compliance Officer (OACO) who is responsible for monitoring live broadcasts and immediately reporting to the board if needed.
To date, the “Memerimar” skit case remains pending, and the board may soon decide based on its evaluation of the parties’ submissions and the evidence on record, in accordance with applicable laws, rules, due process, and the parties’ submissions related to the case. The board also advised the public to avoid making any further statements that may prejudge their final dispositions.
On July 28, 2026, the board called out the It’s Showtime team for a hearing scheduled for July 29, 2026, over multiple complaints involving the “Memerimar” skit, which allegedly contained “inappropriate scenes and racially insensitive and colorist remarks.” A day following the skit was broadcast, before the noontime show was called off on July 25, 2026, Vice Ganda apologized to the public for the inappropriate joke.
